Local cheer team places 4th in Las Vegas
Sean Batura Enterprise Staff Writer May 23, 2023
Local cheerleaders and gymnasts ages 8-13 from Park Elite Sports in Livingston recently placed 4th in a competition against more than 225 teams in Las Vegas, Nevada.
They are Team Royale, and they competed at the Pinnacle Cheerleading Championships hosted by JAMZ Cheerleading and Dance. They performed a series of four stunts sections with four elite skills in each stunt, two jump sections, synchronized tumbling passes and “a crazy dance in just two minutes or less,” according to Corrie Berg, who coaches the team along with Kelly Greisen.
“We are so proud of our athletes,” Berg wrote by email. “It was a banner year for our Junior Prep Team. They had a great performance at the Pinnacle Championships placing 4th in their Division competing against teams from across the United States. They have really worked hard this season proving their skills on the mat this weekend.”
The girls are on the Junior Prep Allstar Cheerleading Team, based at Park Elite Sports in Livingston, and they include Addison Greisen, Brooklyn Borsberry, Blayne Martin, Ivy Ziegler, Natalie Whaley, Olivia Hampson, Sienna Kohler, Sunnie Mendez, Tatiyana Thompson, and Violet Sandoval.
“We have several first-time athletes this year that have to keep up with the veteran athletes, and you would never know who’s new and who’s not,” Berg wrote. “They are getting new skills left and right and always progressing and bring the positivity and grit to practice each week. Cheerleading is hard: it takes time to master skills, it doesn’t just happen in a few months. It takes years to build a foundation of skills to be fluent in jumping, stunting, tumbling and formations. It’s not just rah rah — it’s extremely competitive.”
The competition, held May 12-14, was a United States All Star Federation-sanctioned event for Allstar Cheerleading Teams across the America and the world, according to Berg. The types of teams that competed were All Star Cheerleading Youth & Prep Teams, International Teams & All Star Dance Teams. They included athletes with OC All Stars out of Orange County, California; Motion Athletics, Bozeman; Galaxy Elite, Missoula; Dream Athletics; Samoa, California; Fresno Elite, Fresno, California; Vegas Empire Athletics, Las Vegas, Nevada; LA Dream Allstars, Gardena California; and Revolution Sports Center, Casa Grande, Arizona, among others.
It was the last competition of the season for Park Elite Sports. Berg is the owner and head coach at the studio at 1106 W. Park Street #2. Coaches there train the children, choreograph their routines and cut their music, Berg wrote.
